At Workplace Solutions, we believe that every student deserves an environment where they can learn, grow and thrive. For neurodiverse learners, the right design choices make all the difference; reducing stress, encouraging focus and creating a sense of belonging.

When we design spaces for learners, we design for every mind.

And here’s the thing: these principles don’t just apply to classrooms. You can use them at home too. Whether it’s homework time at the kitchen table, setting up a study nook, or creating a quiet spot for focus, small design choices can have a big impact. After all, let’s face it – focus is hard for all of us sometimes!

Here are 5 key considerations to keep in mind when designing for neurodiverse student spaces (and how they relate at home):

  1. Sensory Balance – Manage noise, light, and color. At home, that might mean a softer lamp instead of overhead lighting, calming paint colors, or using noise-canceling headphones.

  2. Flexibility & Choice – Give options. A student might do math at a desk, read on the couch, or brainstorm at the kitchen island. The key is offering variety so they can choose what feels right in the moment.

  3. Clear Wayfinding – Keep things simple and predictable. At home, that might look like consistent study spots, organized supplies in labeled bins, or a color-coded calendar so everyone knows what’s coming.

  4. Comfort & Ergonomics – Support bodies as much as minds. Think adjustable chairs, cushions, or even a fidget stool for motion. A cozy corner with a beanbag or fuzzy blanket can also make focus time feel less stressful.

  5. Inclusive Technology – Tools matter. At home, this could be text-to-speech apps, timers for managing breaks, or even just making sure there are enough outlets and chargers handy so tech is accessible and frustration-free.

When these elements come together, the result is more than a classroom or a homework station – it’s a space where every student has the opportunity to succeed

And just as important, it’s a place where parents are less stressed too!
